The GH1720QR is the smaller of two Gitzo heads designed specifically for birding applications, with all the smooth movement required for scopes, but without the bulk of a typical video head. The large locking knob acts simultaneously on both pan and tlt mechanisms, giving very precise control. The head can also be used with or without the handle.
Bird watching heads traditionally have been designed for video users, and quite often birders end up using heads which are heavier than the equipment requires in order to get the required control of movements.
This head uses fluid cartridges which respond differently to those in video heads, giving ultra smooth control with slow movements, but allowing unlocking to enable rapid movement for repositioning, and anything in between – all controlled from a single large side-mounted knob.
These cartridges are also small, and so coupled with extremely precise inner mechanisms, has allowed the designers to reduce the bulk and weight considerably.
The pan and tilt movements are controlled together from the lock knob, so if required, the pan handle can be removed to reduce the bulk even further for transportation.
The stated payload uses Gitzo’s own conservative measurement process. Using the typical manufacturer’s standard, with measurement from the head attachment screw, the actual payload is around 10kg, making this head also suitable for use with HD DSLR cameras and large lenses.
A quick release plate with video location pin is included.
